Ello ello!

Good to see you and all that. Il Meccanico is a Swiss-run, Holland-based agency for product-, graphic-, type-, interface- and any other type of design you can think of. In short, we like making things. Here we collect things we like from others, and of course shamelessly plug our own works.

Photolove: Sanna Dullaway’s Colourized Photographs.

Swedish artist Sanna Dullaway has done some interesting work by colouring well-known photographs. And I must say, she’s done a nice job of it! While some people will cry and moan that these historical photos are supposed to be in black & white, and that the colour is mere guesswork, I like them. It add a whole new dimension to famous works by Walker Evans and others, even if it’s just a superficial “additive” to the original work. And none of the originals were damaged in this digital age process :).

Productlove: Metawatch.

Single purpose devices have been a long time going for the younger generation. Watches are one of them. Enter the Metawatch. A bluetooth-enabled wristwatch that tells you all kinds of things — the weather, if you have new mail and so on. For now, this gizmo is a developer platform only (i.e. you need an iOS developer’s license to properly run it). In future, they’ll release an iOS app so you can fully customize your watch to your needs. Buy your own for $199 here. Alternatively, you might want to wait for the e-Paper powered Pebble, that also uses an open SDK.

Furniturelove: Company & Company’s Corner Ladder.

Built out of bone hard beechwood and brass hinges, a full sized ladder collapses down to handy 8.75 x 10 x 170 cm pole. I have some doubts as to its strenght, but it is a clever way to keep a ladder in a less bulky form. Gearpatrol has made similiar conclusions, especially concerning the hinges in the middle of each step (key to the shapeshifting), which is exactly where one would step. The ladder is not yet available, but here’s the product page.

Furniturelove: Colleen Whiteley’s Hold On Tight Shelf.

My fetish for books knows no bounds, and this shelf would solve many of the storage problems I have. Made of shellac-coated beech and powdercoated aluminium. It’s a simple idea. It could be even simpler, ie. putting your books in a massive vice :). Either way, it’ll keep your books from toppling all over the place. Via Dwell.

Designlove: Tetrashed Modular Office.

Hot damn! This is a great idea! Instead of your boring office, you could be working outdoors in your yard (or wherever). Enter the Tetrashed. Very slick looking, and they combine, too — add a few to make an even larger office space. Each “cubicle” houses two workspaces, and some storage room for files, folders andnudy mags TPS reports. All the while made of wood, making it one of the greenest offices ever built.

Designlove: Eungi Kim’s Horsey.

Where was this product 20 years ago? But now the steel horse roams free. Nice work by Eungi Kim of Korea, a small BMX bike (or is it a folding bike?). This design was shortlisted by Designboom and the Seoul Design Foundation in 2010. Now all they have to do is make a pink unicorn version. I can imagine it’s not the fastest, nor the most practical to store anywhere, but it is a cool concept nonetheless. More photos and info on “Horsey” on Ignant.

Productlove: Kitda Studio KDS-POTO2 camera.

This homegrown 35mm film camera not only looks cool, the studio that designed it discloses the full creative process of its making. From rough scetches to the vector artboard that is to be lasercut out of acrylic, you can see all the steps. The results are crude and fun. Just how I like my homemade cameras. See the full process at Kitda Studio.

Designlove: FauxGo Movie Logos.

Interesting collection — as a designer, I often see movies where corporate logos are, well, completely ridiculous and/or hideous. Here’s some of the better ones, that might actually be plausible. Either way, it’s cool collection. See ‘m all here.
